Yoga F.A.Q.S

Essential Yoga knowledge you need to know!

Q.What is yoga?

A.The word yoga is derived from the Sanskrit word meaning union. It is an ancient system of physical and psychic practice that originated during the Indus Valley civilization in South Asia. The first written records of this methodology appeared around 200 BC in Yogasutra of Patanjali. The system consists of the eightfold path, or Asthangayoga. A contemporary interpretation of yoga describes yoga as a systematic practice aimed at developing harmony in the body, mind, and environment.

Q. I do not currently do any form of exercise...can I do yoga?
A. Anyone can do yoga. The important thing is to honor where you are with your ability, flexibility, and endurance, and to be patient with yourself. Move slowly into the postures, and always come out when your body tells you it is time.

Q. What do I wear?
A. Something you can comfortably stretch in. We prefer you do not wear baggy pants, as it is difficult to check correct leg alignment, but stretch tights, stretch shorts and a t-shirt are fine.

Q. What equipment do I need?
A. A good "sticky" mat is helpful, so that you can do the standing postures without sliding. Straps and foam blocks are also helpful for some postures, but are not necessary in the beginning for everyone. I always bring mats to the beginning of every series, so that those who are unsure of the type of mat will have one to use.
